BHYC IW Junior and Youth Championships 2024

7.40am Saturday 2 nd November. I thought I would get to the club early. Wow what a
turnout. Polly had clearly done her best to get an army of volunteers out early with cakes,
teas and coffee, and some very welcome bacon rolls to motivate everyone. With the SIs
written, and the class flags all prepared in the week what could possibly go wrong? Oh
dear, what's all that diesel coming out of the committee boat? Cue some more teamwork
while Duncan and Andy Pavey set to work replacing a split fuel line.
Briefings and rigging continued and most of the competitors set off completely oblivious of what was going on behind the scenes. The competitors had plenty to think about with a 12 knot Easterly testing technique and fitness.
With the racing underway it was clear that skill would be rewarded. There was only 1 ILCA
6 and Gretel Haines showed she can certainly handle it. The ILCA 4 class stayed very
close to her with visitors Will Haines, Will Bradley and Maia Uren coming 1, 2, 3 in every
race with BHYC entries Orlando Orchard, Henry Cook and Alex Biddle filling the next places.
The 6 strong Feva Class also rewarded good technique with Sam Leather and Isla Preston
winning.
The Tera Pro class had a tie for 1st place with Rafe Bradley beating Barney Hall on
the tie break. Well done to Blake Brown for doing all 3 races Plenty of BHYC interest in the Tera Regatta fleet. None of them managed the 3rd race in the increasing wind but Hunter Orchard and Mimi Pim were in the prizes with 2nd and 3rd .
Nobody sailing or helping had any desire to do a 4 th race so everyone returned to the club for
curry or mac n cheese which was well deserved by everyone, especially the support team. Big thank you to all the volunteer team on and off the water. These open events simply would not happen without you all .
