Scow Championships

Blessed with a lovely weekend after many weeks of cold and wet weather, the 2024 Scow Championships got off to a good start at 10am on Saturday. The F3 wind held up under grey skies and gave a consistent breeze throughout the racing.

Hosted this year by BSC and with 13 entries from the two clubs, the start line was set between the Committee Boat and Buoy 'N'. An 'Olympic' style course 1 was set for race one, consisting of a triangle, sausage and triangle, with a laid windward mark near Silver Sands, wing mark buoy 'G' and a downwind finish at 'N'.

In the first race, very close racing in the leading pack saw Bruce Huber gradually drawing away from Jodi, Francesca, Oliver and Will while at the back of the fleet some scows mistook buoy '@' for the windward mark and consequently had a lot of catching up to do.

As a complete change the second race was set as a long windward/leeward style course between the laid windward mark, buoy 'D' and a long beat back to the finish at Pepe (#).

While most boats opted to tack into Priory Bay after 'D', one or two brave souls took a punt on a long tack southwards, just inside the fort, missing the worst of the tide running to Seaview and gaining in the stronger breeze. This paid off and gave Anne first place in this race with Bruce Huber coming in second followed by Jodi in third.

A super morning on the water and many thanks to Mike Samuelson and Lawrence for two excellent races and to the RIB crews for looking after us all.
