Sunday 3rd September saw a colourful and noisy send off for the Clipper fleet from Portsmouth harbour following 3 days of pre-start celebrations. The main channel was closed to allow the fleet to parade past Gunwharf and Southsea based spectators to a start line roughly between Southsea lighthouse and the nearest fort. There was a modest size supporter fleet being marshalled to avoid interference with these 71-foot-long yachts trying to navigate the initial buoys in the Solent in light winds and a very strong tide.

'Our' skipper, Max Rivers, on Our Isles and Oceans had a good few first hours and was lying 3rd when last seen passing Bembridge Ledge at 7 pm. But it's very early days and there's only another 40,000 nautical miles to go! First stop Puerto Sherry, Spain and then directly on to Uruguay.
